AbstractAs part of an effort to reinforce the general education competencies of students in its Associate in Applied Science degree programs, Waukesha County Technical College (WCTC) conducted two needs assessment surveys to develop a list of critical life skills for integration into existing curricula. Each of the identified skills can be developed in 2 years, has measurable outcomes, and is necessary for success in occupational and personal life. A group of general education faculty analyzed the 23 life skills that emerged from the surveys and developed a one-page "clarification" for each skill. The clarifications defined the competency, described the curricular process for developing the skill, and listed the necessary knowledge and attitudes accompanying the skill. Once the skills were identified, special faculty committees began developing curricular strategies for teaching the skills in existing general education courses and for supporting and reinforcing the skills in occupational courses. Following an introduction describing the project's background and methodology, the 23 one-page clarifications are presented for the following critical life skills: career exploration; career selection; career securing; standard written English; oral communication; interpersonal/small group communication; public speaking; reading; information seeking; learning strategies; mathematics; conflict resolution; problem solving; family and social relations; time management; professional and personal ethics; teamwork; valuing diversity; stress management; critical thinking; self-concept; coping with change; and science and technology.
